Frequently Asked Questions
What does this system do?
It monitors fire alarm incidents that occur on the Millersville University Campus, including dormitories and academic buildings.
How often is the data updated?
The system automatically checks for new incidents every few minutes and updates the counter accordingly. The web page refreshes every 5 minutes.
What qualifies as a fire alarm incident?
The system tracks incidents that meet ALL of the following criteria:
- Location: Must be in Millersville Borough
- Address: Must be on one of the qualifying streets on campus: Residence Hall Cir, Lyle, Ganser, Shenks, Pucillo, James, or Centennial
- Units: Must involve the Blue Rock Fire Rescue station 905, which is located just off campus.
- Type: Must contain fire-related keywords such as "fire alarm", "smoke alarm", or "alarm bells"
Where does the data come from?
The data comes directly from the Lancaster County 911 Live Incidents RSS feed, which is updated in real-time by emergency dispatch.
What qualifies as a fire alarm?
Generally, on the Millersville University campus, this qualifies any inadvertant fire alarm activation, as well as any genuine activation caused by a presense of detected smoke or other manual activation. For dormitories on campus (East/South/West), this also counts fire alarms only activated in specific rooms instead of a full room activation.
Does this count fire drills?
Yes, if known. Fire drills in dorm buildings are conducted twice a semester. If a full building evacuation is caused, it will take place of one of those drills (or both, if necessary). There is no current known schedule for academic building fire drills.
How is the fire alarm dispatched?
All fire alarm panels on the Millersville University campus are monitored centrally. When an alarm is known, and the system is not on test mode, the system automatically relays this information to the monitoring system, which will automatically call the fire department.
The monitoring system used to be located in the Student Memorial Center behind the info desk, however, the location of this system is not known. Current possible locations include Boyer and the on-campus maintenance building located in the Palmer Building.
What fire alarm system does Millersville University use?
Millersville University uses Siemens XLS panels. Some buildings, but not all, have voice-evacuation alarm systems (voice messages), but not all systems have this feature.
Who runs this system?
This system is run by a Millersville University student.
Should this be taken seriously?
Absolutely not! As a student in the dorms, hearing the fire siren go off all the time and seeing the whole dorm getting evacuated, I wanted to see how much this actually happens. Therefore, I created this!
